The Academic Leader Competency Model
A practical, evidence-based framework designed to help academic leaders strengthen leadership effectiveness, culture, and organizational impact.
The Academic I/O Competency Model translates Industrial–Organizational Psychology into clear, observable leadership behaviors tailored to academic environments. It supports individual contributors, managers, and senior leaders across higher education and K–12 systems.
Why a Competency Model for Academic Leaders?
Academic leadership is shaped by shared governance, professional autonomy, and complex institutional systems. Traditional leadership models often fail to reflect these realities.
This model was created to:
- Clarify what effective leadership looks like in academic settings
- Provide a shared language for development and coaching
- Align leadership behavior with engagement, inclusion, and performance
- Support growth at every leadership level
The model is grounded in research from Industrial–Organizational Psychology and designed for real-world application.
